Larry Cannon works primarily in watercolor using a direct painting method on stretched paper utilizing large washes, glazing and reductive techniques. His work is focused on landscapes and seascapes of Northern California, especially Marin and Sonoma Counties.

A great many of his landscapes are painted plein air where the subtleties of light and color are inspirations which Cannon uses to infuse the paintings with a unique sense of place and moment. He is especially devoted to the special qualities of the late afternoon light and wind on the landscape and to the ever-changing moods of the ocean and seashore.

Larry Cannon is self-taught as an artist, following Bachelor and Masters of Architecture degrees from the University of Illinois and a thirty-year achitectural and urban planning career in California. Cannon is a signature member of the California Watercolor Association and the Society of Western Artists, He is a participating member of the Marin Society of Artists, Watercolor Artists of Sonoma County, and the Marin County Watercolor Society.

In 1998 Cannon was selected by the nationally known artist Wolf Kahn as one of only five watercolorists in the State of California for inclusion in a California All-Media Exhibition at the San Diego Museum of Art sponsored by the San Diego Artists Guild. In 2000 Cannon exhibited in the Triton Museum of Art Biennial Statewide Watercolor Competition and Exhibition.

Cannon's many awards include First Place twice at the California Watercolor Association Bay Model Exhibit.

Having studied with contemporary artists Marilyn Simandle, Charles Ried, Jim Kosvanec, Tom Lynch and Dean St. Clair, Cannon is strongly influenced by the great historical figures in watercolor, especially Percy Grey, Sir William Russell Flint, John Singer Sergeant and Winslow Homer.
