E. John Robinson

E. John Robinson has always been an artist. He started with pencils, crayons, anything he could find, until he was given watercolors at age six. He graduated to oils at age twelve and has been painting ever since. His first award came in high school when he placed among the top ten in the National Scholastic Art Contest. Since then he has avoided such contests considering popular acceptance much more satisfying.

From there he went on to study art in Seattle at the Cornish School of Arts, then to the California College of Arts and Crafts, Oakland, California. He was told no one could ever make a living as an artist so he entered education and taught public school. However, after twelve years he was making more from his paintings than as a teacher so he and his family moved to the village of Mendocino on the rugged north coast of California where he could specialize in painting the sea. From 1960 to 1980, E. John painted only the sea and with a keen reverence for Nature that is a hallmark in his paintings. He eventually painted landscapes as well and carried the same love of nature to them.

Today, after a long, satisfying career, he can look back on over 4,000 seascapes, most of which are in private collections, four covers for Reader’s Digest, instructional books, articles, and video tapes, and widespread recognition. His paintings are in numerous collections of notables as well as corporations both in America and Europe.
