Ray Carpenter
Ray Carpenter is a native Californian, and as such, as always held an affinity for the Pacific seascape and rugged Sierras. But, as a young man, he was also fortunate to spend time on a Sioux reservation in Montana…a period which provided a direct source of inspiration for his paintings, from the Rocky Mountains to the big sky landscapes of Montana.
Returned from service in Viet Nam, Ray divided his time between business and painting. After a while, however, he devoted himself solely to oil painting, studying under such internationally acclaimed artists as Daniel Greene, Donald “Putt” Putman and Howard Terpening. A growing fascination with landscape, as well as portraiture, brought him first to the Scottsdale Art School and later to the California College of Arts and Crafts. He has also studied with CAA artists Gary Carter, Joe Beeler and Roy Anderson. In Ray’s powerful landscapes, we are reintroduced to our western states…an area he is especially fond of depicting and from which evolved his bold sense of color and brush work. |
